Mistakes to avoid with your puppy

(or how to avoid turning an adorable ball of fluff into a nightmare roommate)

Welcoming a puppy into your home is a bit like inviting a miniature rock star: they're cute, they're bursting with energy… and they can turn the house upside down in less than five minutes flat. Puppy training is a wonderful adventure, but some very common mistakes can complicate the relationship in the long run.
Good news: they are avoidable 🐾
1. Thinking that "it will go away on its own"
The puppy that jumps, nips, barks, or steals socks? 👉 "It's normal, he's small, it will pass…"
Spoiler alert: no . A puppy is like a highly motivated but inexperienced intern: if you don't show it what to do, it invents its own rules. And usually… they're not compatible with our sofa.
👉 Education starts from day one , even when it is tiny and irresistible.
2. Being inconsistent in the rules
Today the sofa is allowed. Tomorrow, it is forbidden. The day after tomorrow… only when you are tired.
For a puppy, it's like living in a treasure hunt without clues. The result: misunderstanding, frustration, and undesirable behaviors.
🎯 A clear rule, applied by the whole family, all the time. Yes, even when his gaze could melt an iceberg.
3. Going too fast, too hard
A puppy is not a robot that can be programmed in 72 hours. It's a baby, with an attention span close to that of popcorn on the stove.
Wanting perfect cleanliness, exemplary walking on a leash and military recall in a few weeks is setting the bar too high… for everyone.
⏳ Education is a marathon, not a sprint.
4. Punishing instead of explaining
Shouting, scolding or punishing “after the fact” is a bit like yelling at someone for a mistake without explaining why.
A puppy doesn't do "naughty things":
he explores,
he learns,
He discovers the world… often with his mouth.
🧠 A behavior is learned, it cannot be corrected by fear. We reinforce what we want to see repeated and we support it with kindness.
5. Neglecting socialization
Socialization isn't just about passing two dogs on the street corner. It's about teaching the puppy that:
Humans are diverse,
The world can be noisy,
Novelty is not dangerous.
A poorly socialized puppy is like someone who has never left their village and suddenly finds themselves in Times Square.
🌍 The more positively a puppy discovers the world, the more balanced it will become as an adult.
6. Forgetting that the puppy is part of the family
A puppy is not trained against the family, but with it . If everyone applies their own rules, the puppy becomes the conductor of a joyful chaos.
👨👩👧👦 Education is a team effort , where humans and dogs learn together.
In conclusion
Training a puppy is not about striving for perfection. It's about laying solid foundations, understanding your dog, and building a lasting, peaceful, and balanced relationship.
With consistency, patience and appropriate support, your puppy will not only become “well-behaved”: 👉 it will become a true member of the family , comfortable in its own skin… and in your daily life.
And between us: a few sacrificed socks are well worth this adventure ❤️🐶
